An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is used to protect critical loads from utility-supplied power problems, including spikes, brownouts, fluctuations and power outages, all using a dedicated battery. There are three basic functions that it essentially performs:

• Avoids damage to hardware caused by overcurrent’s and voltage spikes. Many UPS models also continuously regulate the input power.
• Avoids data loss and damage. Without a UPS, data stored on devices subject to sudden shutdowns can be corrupted or completely lost. Power management software also allows and facilitates the controlled shutdown of the system.
• Ensures the availability of networks and other applications while avoiding downtime. If used in conjunction with a power generator, will ensure that they have enough time to ignite in the event of a power failure.

Offline UPS - also referred to as VFD (Voltage and Frequency Dependent) or Standby UPS - offer the most basic level of power protection. When mains supply is present, the UPS output is supplied via a built-in EMI/RFI filter which provides the load with protection from spikes and transients by clamping peak voltage to pre-defined levels. When the mains supply fails or fluctuates outside of the UPS's operating window, a relay connects the load to the inverter output (resulting in a 4-8ms transfer time). In normal operation, with mains supply present, both output voltage and frequency will track the input voltage and frequency respectively.

Line interactive technology sits between offline and online. The load is fed from mains during normal operation, however unlike 'offline', this technology incorporates various filters to provide voltage stabilisation and help suppress spikes and transients.

Off-line (VFD) systems are usually low cost products designed for a simple one or two user PC installations, they offer little or no protection against most supply problems and really only give support for short-term power loss. The load is fed from the mains during normal operation, hence 'off-line'. On-line (VFI) UPS systems are regarded as 'high-end' and employ more sophisticated technology which uses a rectifier and inverter, hence 'double-conversion'. This effectively isolates the load from virtually all types of power supply problems. The output power is fed from the batteries and not straight through from the mains.
